The Perennial Predicament of Evil and the Power of Laws
The Reality of Laws in Our Society
The legitimacy of a nation is often gauged by its adherence to the law. In fact, lawmakers we elect to the House and Senate are judged based on their ability to craft new laws. Despite this, societal misconduct continues unabated. One would question the efficacy of the countless laws we have in place, considering the undying instances of driving under influence, texting while driving, child abuse, domestic violence, and other forms of antisocial behavior.
Existing Laws: Are They Enough?
The continuation of misconduct despite stringent legal deterrents has often led to a clamor for stricter gun laws. Critics often cite the abundance of gun regulations already in place and their general disregard by those predisposed to such behaviours. An insight into this predicament was offered by the late Charlton Heston, then-president of the NRA, who asserted that guns, in themselves, aren’t good or bad. Their characterization depends on the hands that wield them.
Historical Evidence: The Power of Laws and the Allure of Evil
Historically, ancient Israel presents a good example of how laws, no matter how well-intentioned, can be disregarded. Despite the widely revered Ten Commandments and numerous other laws, records reveal that the Israelites routinely ignored them. Even the notable figures of the Old Testament, like Jacob, Moses, Samson, King David, King Solomon, and Hezekiah, are recorded to have defied the laws they were well aware of.
Evil: The Root Cause of Defiance
Despite the overwhelming evidence that we need laws to maintain order, they are routinely disregarded by those committed to their violation. It’s important to recognize that the crux of the issue isn’t a lack of clarity in the laws, or an insufficient quantity. Rather, it’s the perpetual existence of evil in society. Humanity, since its creation, has engaged in a rebellion against God, His laws, precepts, and statutes, resulting in a trail of poverty, cruelty and destruction.
The Solution: A Spiritual Transformation
While laws continue to form the bedrock of any civilized society, the answer to this perennial problem lies in spiritual transformation, found in Jesus Christ, who referred to Himself as “the way and the truth and the life”. Upon our spiritual transformation as new creations in Christ, we’re gifted not only with new spiritual life but also a newfound desire to pursue what is right and reject what isn’t.
Conclusion: A Transformation beyond the Mundane
While the importance of laws is undoubted, pointing people to Jesus isn’t just about assuring their salvation. God’s desire is for us to become living examples of lives transformed by the power of Christ, illustrating the potential for humanity to successfully rise above its “sinful nature” and embrace a life of righteousness.
